Unwanted hair

Unsightly and annoying: here’s how to behave.

What are they

From two to three million: there are many hair follicles scattered on our body. Most are not productive while countless are those that cover more or less extensive areas of a clear and thin hair, practically invisible.

This is the case of the arms and face. Visible and darker are the hairs that grow on the legs, armpits and pubic and inguinal area. All these hairs are normal and distribution, texture and quantity are individual: some may possess too many and too dark from an aesthetic point of view.

The causes

Normally the first hairs appear in pubertal age and are the sign of the start of sexual maturation of females and males. In women, menopause, due to the drop in estrogen, can cause hair to grow around the chin or, generally, on the face.

The sudden appearance of hair in childbearing age, on the other hand, if it is not due to the intake of some drugs known to be responsible for a sharp increase in body hair when used for a long time, should be reported to the doctor as it could indicate the presence of some disorder, such as polycystic ovary.

The remedies

The method to remove hair should be chosen depending on the area from which you want to remove it. Depilation consists of shaving the hair while epilation also removes the root.

Permanent hair removal

Among the possible treatments, pulsed light, which consists in the selective heating of the hair follicle through the application of light energy. In practice, it is the deactivation of the bulb matrix.

It is not much different from the laser method, which is based on the elimination of melanin present in the hair bulb. Electrolysis, that is, the introduction of a very thin needle that, transmitting small electrical discharges, is able to burn the hair bulb.

Extra touches

To prevent some hairs from becoming fleshed, it is good to make a scrub regularly and exfoliate the skin before using the razor or epilator.

Depilatory creams are usually removed with a pallet in the package: be careful not to overdo it with the pressure so as not to risk redness. Alternatively, a horsehair glove that is not too hard may be useful.

The best time to depilate is during the menstrual cycle, when the activity of the hair bulbs is at rest: the result will be longer-lasting. In the days just before the cycle, however, the body is more sensitive to pain and waxing may be poorly tolerated.

There are products on the market that slow down regrowth: these are creams or lotions that, if used over time, inhibit hair production.
