Potassium bicarbonate: benefits and contraindications

Potassium bicarbonate is also known as potassium bicarbonate or potassium hydrogen carbonate. As the name suggests, this bicarbonate is rich in potassium and therefore contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous and muscular system and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

  • pharmaceutical industry, where it finds wide acceptance as an alkalizing and control of the basic balance of the body;
  • food industry, as a food additive with the functions of acidity regulator and leavening agent.

Potassium bicarbonate: uses and beneficial properties

Potassium bicarbonate:

  • It helps to alkalize the body, regulates the acid-base balance of our body, maintaining an adequate pH level and correcting excess acidity. This alkalizing action contributes to the proper performance of the functions of our cellular metabolism, helps prevent various disorders and diseases, such as kidney stones;
  • regulates the amount of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus;
  • It counteracts excess sodium, hindering water retention and hypertension.

It is low in sodium, therefore, in case of high blood pressure it can be used as a substitute for baking soda.

The administration of bicarbonates counteracts the onset of metabolic acidosis. This disease is caused by an accumulation of acids in the body and the consequent alterations of the acid-base balance.

Potassium bicarbonate is really very versatile. The solution of water and bicarbonate allows to obtain different results:

  • helps digestion;
  • helps neutralize stomach acid. Baking soda is often used as an antacid treatment to counteract heartburn. Use it in a natural remedy? Just mix the lemon juice with water and potassium bicarbonate;
  • If drunk on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, the mix of warm water, lemon juice and baking soda, turns out to be an excellent ally for the diet. It helps us burn fat more quickly, and recharges us with a full of antioxidant vitamins.

Other applications of potassium bicarbonate

Potassium bicarbonate is a rather versatile substance, and is also reflected in the daily routine:

  • for teeth cleaning and oral hygiene of the mouth in general;
  • for personal hygiene;
  • to give relief in case of slight skin redness, irritation and insect bites;
  • For home hygiene: as a degreaser for kitchen and bathroom.

Potassium bicarbonate: contraindications

Like all supplements, potassium bicarbonate should also be taken carefully and under medical supervision. It is always good to follow the dosage and advice of your doctor to avoid worsening any diseases.

Improper use or administration of an excessive amount, could have some side effects. You may therefore experience symptoms such as:

  • Cramps;
  • aerophagia;
  • diarrhoea;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • abdominal distention;
  • gastrointestinal disorders in general;
  • fatigue;
  • vomit;
  • hypertension;
  • weakness;
  • kidney disorders;
  • nausea.

Among the possible contraindications arising from the use of potassium bicarbonate we remember: renal failure or diagnosis of decreased renal function, taking diuretic drugs. There are no contraindications in case of pregnant and breastfeeding women, but it is advisable to take supplements only under strict medical supervision and to always read the warnings.
