What is it

A typical tree of the Australian regions, the melaleuca is also inappropriately called “tea tree“.

Activity

Melaleuca oil contains various aromatic substances with disinfectant action. These include terpinen-4-ol, an alcohol that makes up about 40% of the oil, and monoterpenes.

In some experimental studies it has been shown that melaleuca oil has an antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and anti-inflammatory action.

In fact, this herbal remedy has proved effective against candida infection or viruses such as adenovirus and herpes simplex type 1, even at low concentrations and even in patients with immune problems.

Given its remarkable solubility in fats, this substance is well absorbed by the body even if applied to the skin.

Why is it used

Melaleuca leaves are traditionally used by indigenous Australians for their general and skin disinfectant properties. In the West its use is relatively recent.

It is indicated in candidiasis, especially those resistant to drugs commonly used for these infections and for other mycoses and skin infections.

Melaleuca oil is also prescribed in numerous genitourinary infectious diseases, being quite tolerated, if diluted, even by the most delicate mucous membranes.

How to use it

It should not be taken orally, but should only be used for external applications due to its irritating action on the digestive system. The recommended pharmaceutical preparation is essential oil.

Effects

Melaleuca oil is not particularly pleasant to taste and smell, especially if in pure form. It is therefore necessary to dilute it to avoid any irritation to the skin and mucous membranes.

Sometimes skin irritations and allergic reactions are possible, although in isolated cases.

Precautions

Pure melaleuca oil is contraindicated in pregnancy, during lactation and in patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency of a certain magnitude.

Interactions

There are no known interactions with drugs or other herbal medicines.
