True, mother nature can give us a little (or big) help, but keeping teeth and gums in perfect health is our job. Here is a simple decalogue to have a beautiful and healthy mouth.
A beautiful smile is the best business card to show off both in personal relationships and in the workplace.
But to avoid the formation of plaque and annoying gum inflammation, a good dose of patience and proper oral hygiene is essential.
Using the right products, following the advice of the dentist and dedicating the necessary time to teeth and gums are the best weapons.
So let’s see 10 simple rules to follow to get “shining” results.
1 – The toothbrush. It must be chosen carefully: the bristles must be made of synthetic fibers and the appropriate size for your mouth so that you can carefully brush all your teeth. It should be changed every 2 months or when the bristles begin to sag. You can also opt for an electric one that ensures the same performance as manual ones.
2 – Toothpaste. To increase the cleansing action of the toothbrush, use a fluoride-based toothpaste and, if necessary, a specific product for sensitive teeth.
3 – How many times and how. Remember to brush your teeth after every meal and especially after consuming foods or drinks containing sugar. Be careful to brush your teeth with a top-down movement for the upper arch and from bottom to top for the lower one.
4 – Dental floss. It should be used at least once a day to get to the spaces between tooth and tooth where the toothbrush does not act effectively.
5 – The mouthwash. It can be another valuable ally: you can choose between fluoride-based ones, which help delay plaque build-up and strengthen enamel, and antibacterial disinfectants.
6 – Altolà to plaque. Eliminating plaque is important not only for the teeth, but also for the gums because it tends to inflame them and sometimes causes diseases (periodontitis or gingivitis) that can compromise the tissues supporting the teeth.
7 – Low in sugar. Limit the intake of sugars, responsible for the increase of bacterial plaque.
8 – Stop smoking. Another great enemy of white teeth is cigarette smoke: here is one more reason to stop smoking or, at least, to reduce the number of cigarettes as much as possible.
9 – Regular checks. Even if you have no discomfort or pain, go to your dentist every six months, for a check-up and for an oral hygiene session.
10 – White in the foreground. And, finally, aesthetics also wants its part: for teeth that are always white, there are several DIY whitening products to buy in pharmacies, or professional, which the dentist can apply to you and which ensure better and lasting results, safeguarding the health of the gums. Remember, however, that all these products do not whiten resin fillings or fixed ceramic prostheses.
