Distinguishing between colds and flu may not always be simple. Especially at an early stage, because the two infections induce very similar symptoms.
Then the differences show up. Of course. The cold usually only affects the respiratory tract: stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough.
Fever, in colds, is rare, except in children. Infrequent, or at least mild, are fatigue and muscle pain.
And then the symptoms usually resolve in 4-7 days without leaving any particular aftermath. The only risk, for those who are predisposed, is sinusitis.
To be flu you need fever
In case of flu, however, fever is almost always present, it occurs quickly, it is usually high and can last for 3-5 days.
The fever is then accompanied by pain in the bones and muscles, weakness and fatigue. Headache, sore throat and cough may appear, which can last up to three weeks.
After healing you may still feel weak and tired for days.
In any case, the symptoms of colds and flu, although different, can be alleviated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs because at the origin of both there is a single mechanism, inflammation.
