Cataract: prevent it with vitamins and do not postpone the intervention

A study demonstrates the role of antioxidants in prevention. The European experts meeting in Amsterdam explain: “Postponing the operation is counterproductive.”

A diet rich in antioxidants, including vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E, reduces the risk of cataract problems over the years. To say it is a study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

And it is not the first: in recent years there have been several researches conducted on the prevention of age-related cataracts and almost all agree in affirming the fundamental role of antioxidants, taken with the diet or through supplements, in preventing eye disease.

A 2010 study found, for example, that the use of vitamin supplements by women between the ages of 50 and 60 can decrease the risk of developing cataracts by 60 percent.

Better not to wait

It mainly affects the elderly: after the age of 70, two out of three people suffer from it. Every year in Italy about 500 thousand patients are operated on cataracts.

In recent years, intervention technologies have evolved a lot and it is now possible to apply personalized artificial crystalline lenses that also correct astigmatism and presbyopia, eliminating the need to wear glasses after the operation.

This was reported by ophthalmologists at the recent congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery held in Amsterdam.

And the urban legend according to which you have to wait until the cataract is “mature” to be able to do the surgery is also largely overcome: today it is possible, indeed advisable, to operate when the problem begins to represent an obstacle to everyday life. Without unnecessary and dangerous waiting.
